WSET® LEVEL 3 AWARD IN SPIRITS QUALIFICATION

The WSET Level 3 Award in Spirits is an advanced qualification created for professionals who work closely with spirits, as well as committed enthusiasts looking to reach the highest level of structured spirits study.

Throughout the course, you will explore a broad range of categories and taste an outstanding selection of spirits from respected producers around the world. You will examine the raw materials, production methods and decisions that shape each spirit’s style and quality, while developing a more precise and analytical approach to tasting with the support of an experienced WSET educator. Students learn not only to recognise different categories and styles but also to explain why a spirit looks, smells and tastes the way it does, and how production decisions influence its quality.

On successful completion, you will receive the WSET Level 3 Award in Spirits certificate and will be entitled to use the relevant WSET certified logo.

Entry requirements

The Level 3 Award in Spirits is designed to build on an existing level of knowledge, equivalent to the Level 2 Award in Spirits. For this reason, the course is primarily open to students who have studied for the Level 2 Award in Spirits, or the Spirits module of the Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits. If you have not studied for either of these but believe you have the relevant knowledge, you can also gain entry through our Level 3 Award in Spirits online entry test.

All classes are delivered in English, and assessment involves the writing of short-form answers. Therefore, a strong grasp of written and spoken English is beneficial.

The only necessary study material for this course is the Level 3 Award in Spirits study pack, which will be sent when your booking is confirmed.

You must be at least 18 years old to enrol on any of our courses.

The Level 3 tasting method develops the ability to:

  • Identify important structural and flavour characteristics
  • Connect sensory characteristics to production decisions
  • Assess the quality of a spirit
  • Support quality conclusions with clear evidence
  • Identify the category and type of selected spirits

This moves beyond identifying flavours. Students are expected to explain how raw materials, fermentation, distillation and post-distillation choices have shaped the spirit in the glass.
